In our experience, with the integration of the birth tissue donation program, we have had minimal extra work for the labor and delivery staff. Birth Tissue Donor Services works to complete all the steps possible so that clinical staff only need to collect a few extra tubes of blood with IV starts and fill collection vials if collecting in the OR. There is no extra paperwork, education, or documentation required for staff.

Why wouldn’t you have a birth tissue donation program? There is absolutely no extra work on your staff. It makes patients feel good about the donation, and the staff and physicians feel like we are making a difference. Birth Tissue Donor Services provides all the supplies that are needed, so there are no costs incurred to the unit. Their staff are so nice and professional and blend seamlessly into the team. I honestly wish we had started this partnership before we did. I can’t think of one single reason not to offer your patients the opportunity to donate.
BENEFITS OF BIRTH TISSUE DONATION
Donated birth tissue includes the placenta, umbilical cord and amniotic fluid. The unique properties of birth tissue allografts help minimize inflammation and prevent infection. These allografts allow patients with burns or chronic wounds to heal exponentially faster and with minimal scarring compared to traditional treatments.

Some uses of birth-tissue allografts:
-
Severe burns
-
Ophthalmic applications
-
Spinal injuries
-
Chronic wounds, including diabetic ulcers
-
Sports medicine
-
MOHS surgery
“When asked to donate, I immediately said yes! My brother was in an accident that caused severe wounds and burns. He was admitted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and was treated with placental skin grafts. Today, he is almost scar-free, has full function of his extremities and is doing very well.”
